What is film piracy? Where do these pirated copies come from? There are number of ways that people pirate movies. The second way is by hacking the computer of a film studio and copying the film. Fortunately, these two ways are not practiced in Nepal.

So the question still remains unanswered. When the rights of a film is sold abroad, the film-makers send a digital copy of the film via internet. That means, the organizers would always have a copy of the film. The copies might be shared among friends and then there are more people with the film, making it more vulnerable to be shared online.
Also, a team member from the production might do the mischief for some reason. Other ways might include buying an original DVD of the film and uploading it online.
How does piracy affect the film industry? Our films are now not only limited to their screenings in Nepal. The films which do good in Nepal or have become popular even before their releases are often sold in various countries around the world.
The films are generally screened only after few weeks of its release in Nepal and their screenings continue for a couple of months all around the world. If a film is uploaded online illegally, most of the people would prefer to watch it on their computers, for free of course, and hence the films will not be sold anymore or even if they are already sold, the organizers will have to bear a huge loss; making it more difficult for the films to be sold in future as well. Nepali films have a very limited audience and to make it worse, they have to compete with big budget Hollywood and Bollywood films.
As the foreign films have a bigger market, they are able to make good money even though their films get pirated on the very first day, sometimes even before the release of the film. How are you taking in the success of 'Kabaddi Kabaddi'?

I credit the success of 'Kabaddi Kabaddi' to its prequel. I hear some people watched the film as many as 17 times. So I believe that the love and goodwill for the first film is what pulled viewers to the cinemas this time around, too. This also means well for the financial side of it, especially in the light of the present crisis. Actually we were in a fix regarding the release date.

Should we wait until the crisis is resolved? But when would the situation get better? So we decided to go ahead. People say the strength of your films lie in the story and your characters. I like stories that are rooted in reality.
Before I started 'Kabaddi', I went off to Mustang for two weeks to learn about the people and their lifestyle there. All my characters are inspired by real people, one way or another. I remember when we were shooting for the first film, the owner of the house that Maiyya's mom runs the small shop in, was looking at the proceedings very strangely.
Later I found out that her story was similar to Maiyya's mother. Her husband had also not been home for almost 15 years and she had raised her children singlehandedly. What about the fact that Maiyya's character doesn't seem as well fleshed out as the others? This concern was raised during the preproduction, too.
I'm not adept at writing female characters because I'm not very close to or comfortable with women.

That's probably why I wasn't able to delve deeper when it came to Maiyya. However, the film centers on politics this time and that's where the whole focus was. We did introduce the fact that the village college was closed due to elections and Maiyya also speaks to her father about wishing to go to the capital.
