But for those who wear those uniforms, medals — especially combat awards — are not only a source of professional pride and boosted morale, but often are linked to promotions and key career-building assignments. Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Mike Boorda committed suicide in only hours after learning he was being investigated by Newsweek for improperly wearing combat medals from Vietnam.

Make no mistake, say experts, medals are important to those uniforms. Marine Corps and the soon-to-be-released book by the same title for the Navy, laughed out loud when called for comment.
According to Defense Department regulations, the medal is to be awarded to servicemembers "engaged in an action against an enemy of the United States" or an "opposing foreign force. It also included the airspace above these areas, thus covering the aircrews of long-range bombers and naval aircraft flying missions into the combat zone. Servicemembers in Macedonia and Bosnia were already considered inside the combat zone because of earlier designations.
The Air Medal covers heroism in flight. The citation for the lieutenant colonel in Missouri, like most, reads that he earned the medal for "meritorious achievement while engaged in ground operations against an opposing armed force. And he was not alone.Joss Stone, 'Stars Earn Stripes,' and More - Off Duty Tease
At least four more at Whiteman got the Bronze Star as well, including the support commander, the operations commander and the leader of the bomber wing itself — none of them for actions in the combat zone. Closer, but still hundreds of miles from the fighting in Yugoslavia, the civil engineering squadron commander at Aviano Air Base, Italy, got the Bronze Star nod for building a "miraculous" tent city, accord ing to his citation.
So, too, did the three colonels who spent the vast majority of the war "engaged in ground operations against an opposing armed force" behind their desks at Ramstein Air Base, Germany, working on overflight clearances and basing rights. In fact, of the medals handed out by the Air Force in the nine months since the war ended, nine out of every ten have been awarded for service far from the combat zone in the Balkans. The results show what several military experts and combat historians describe as a disturbing trend not only in the Air Force, but in the Navy as well.

I will tell you this In my view, it takes a lot more courage to talk peace with your enemy and try to gain mutual understanding than it does to drop bombs on them, or to aim down a gun site and shoot them. I'm very proud of my military service.
But one of the things I am most proud of was when I once talked down a man who was about to seriously injure or kill myself and about 15 others. This was years after the military.
I used compassion, not a gun. No violence, injury, or death. I've done a lot of things in my life I am proud of, but of that I am perhaps most proud. I didn't even receive a medal, money, or public honors.
I just did what I felt was right, and it saved all of us. This doesn't make me some "expert" or "hero" We all can do this if we really commit ourselves. I think these Nobel Prize winners need to do some research. The link between war and sports is inescapable.
That's just the way it is. And I watched the show last night. It most certainly did honor those who serve. The winner would get to be the guest of that Milqetoast English guy. The opponents would be volunteers that have served in a Ranger or Marine Infantry Battalion that have trained for a year with a U. The POL would be given one of those steak knives like you see at Golden Corral, and the opponent would carry an e-tool and the atlatl.
The Marine or Ranger would not have lived in the camp; instead, he would have had his choice of TV chef for a month and been fed by nude Playboy bunnies. The commercials would be short bouts of beach volleyball featuring Misty May and Kerri. Have the Obama Youth goosestepping in time in front of the White House? It helps remove illiusions their misleading films teach children.
Do they really have nothing better to do than complain about a TV show? If these laureates took the time to think about the show, they might recognize the value of our military for defense against aggressors.
But, no, they are the Neville Chamberlains of our day. Pretend that no one wants to do you harm and declare "peace in our time. Was it cheesy and over the top? But it was better than many other reality shows. We got to see the skill of the retired military personnel on the show, as well as the genuine effort by the celebrities to do their best.
Did the celebrities become experts? Of course not, nor did they claim to. The show's main purpose is entertainment. It also gives us an appreciation of our military and raises money for some worthwhile military-related charities. Words can't even explain how grateful I am.
I saw a lot of the destruction from the war when I was very young. I grew up, as did so many children, knowing that the world is not a safe place.
